For a lot of people, their cars are their pride and joy. And if you’re reading this right now, you’re probably one of them! The appearance of your car is a big part of being a car enthusiast. Have you ever thought about customising the look of your vehicle? If you have, you might have initially thought about a new paint job. But what if there was a quicker, cheaper way to give your car a stunning new look? Welcome to the world of car wrapping!
Vehicle wrapping is an effective way to give your car a fresh makeover. Why choose it over a new paint job? A new showroom-quality paint job is not only expensive (with costs reaching as high as $20,000) but it is also a long project, with many paint jobs taking a month to complete.
With car wrapping, you get the same exact results of a showroom paint job, at more than half the cost and a quarter of the time. Sounds interesting to you? Let’s take a closer look at car wrapping including its advantages over paint jobs and how to maintain your new wrap!
What is car wrapping?
Car wrapping involves applying large sheets of high quality vinyl onto your car to achieve a new, desired look. Vinyl wraps began in the 1980s and 1990s as a cheaper alternative to paint. However, it wasn’t until the Germans started to mass wrap their taxis (as part of a law that required taxis to be painted in beige) that custom vehicle wrapping really took off.
Nowadays, vinyl wrapping cars are incredibly popular – mainly due to the fact that they are cheaper, quicker and can give you a wide range of different looks. There are several types of wraps that many car retrofitters and wrappers can apply to your car. These include:
- Fluorescent colours
However, vinyl wraps aren’t just limited to those. Some car owners have gone above and beyond with the creativity of their wraps, including this Tesla owner who made his car look like it came straight out of a video game. Anything is possible with vinyl wraps, all you have to do is think of it!
Advantages of car wraps
We’ve touched on this before but what are the real benefits of choosing car wrapping over a new paint job? There are 5 main advantages: job speed, affordability, protection, custom designs, business signage.
Quick and easy job
Car wraps are typically a quick and easy job, at least compared to the days and weeks that go into new paint jobs. The majority of car wraps take between 1 – 5 days to complete. This includes the time it takes to clean the car, apply the vinyl and the time it takes to let the full wrap completely set.
Relatively cheaper than paint jobs
As we had mentioned before, custom vehicle wrapping can be much cheaper than a paint job. This is especially true for ‘showroom quality’ paint jobs which can cost as much as $20,000. A car wrap will give you the exact same outcome without forking over your entire savings!
Vinyl wraps act like an outer skin for your car. They go over your car’s original paint, protecting it from the wear and tear of daily driving. For those who like their car’s original paint work, transparent or clear wraps exist to help protect it. Holes and small tears can also be easily touched up at your local car retrofitter.
Custom designs and styles
One of the biggest draws to car wrapping is its ability to give your car whatever look you desire. Your design is only limited to your imagination! From futuristic chrome wraps to sleek matte looks, the world is truly your oyster!
This benefit of custom designs lends itself well to business signage and graphics. Want to show off your business on your company car? A captivating, eye-catching wrap will provide your business with free advertising wherever you drive.
How to clean your vinyl wrap
If you do decide to wrap your car, it’s important to know how to clean and take care of it. Regular car washing methods are suitable but it should be noted that gentle techniques are usually required.
Gentle hand washing is the best way to clean your wrapped car. Harsh cleaning solutions and overly abrasive sponges or cloths should be avoided as it may damage the vinyl wrap. Apart from that, the usual cleaning methods apply:
- Rinse with clean water
- Remove water spotting with a squeegee
- Dry with a clean microfiber cloth
Pressure washers can be used to clean your car wrap but they should be set below 2000 psi and be used at a safe distance and angle. Drive through car washes are not recommended. This is because the brushes of a drive-through car wash can degrade or peel the wrap.

Car wrapping is a trend that is not going away any time soon – and with good reason! It’s affordability, quickness and custom designs will make it a mainstay in the car industry for many years to come.
